Xbox 360 Avatars & Kinect Controller (MP3's)

Picture
Music to Xbox 360 Avatars  composed by Steve Burke. Developed by Rare Ltd./Microsoft Corporation / Copyright, Microsoft Corporation.

The Xbox Live Avatars Editor is pre-installed on all Xbox 360 game consoles (over 66 million Xbox 360's and 18 million Kinect controllers sold to date) uses 10mins of Steve's music exclusively. He also created the sound effects for the Avatars editor (including the 'burps', if you press in the Right Thumb Stick).

The first release of Avatars Editor for the Xbox 360's frontend dashboard was in November 2008 with 10 mins of music and all sound effects by Steve, who at the time was working at Rare Ltd./Microsoft Game Studios as an in-house Composer and Sound Designer.

When the Kinect motion sensor was released in 2010, Steve was asked to write all new music for the Avatars Editor and also for the main Xbox 360 dashboard. In addition to the two MP3's you can download here, there is close to 8mins of background music when editing your Avatars on the Xbox 360 console. The distinctive Marimba instrument is used throughout. Here are the main Avatars theme for the Xbox 360 Nov2008 dash update, and the Nov2010 Kinect update.

Other Music, just for fun (MP3's)

Picture
Composed by Steve Burke / Copyright, Steve Burke. All rights reserved.

Here is the section where you can hear some non-game related music, and earlier examples of music from Steve's time at music college and working as a film composers assistant. This is just for a bit of fun, some of these recordings are a little old and not always performed so well. Everybody has to start somewhere...

Three early orchestral recordings, circa 1999/2000, of Steve's first attempts at orchestrating and recording a live orchestra. These were written as an exercise in using Sibelius notation software to score music, and to try out some orchestral techniques learnt in college.

Early Orchestral Tune 1  (2min 19sec)
Early Orchestral Tune 2  (1min 52sec)
Early Orchestral Tune 3  (2min 11sec)

To apply for the job at Rare Ltd. , Steve was asked to submit three pieces of music written to a brief supplied by Rare. These three tracks were 1> Action Tune, 2> Kid's Racing Game (similar to Diddy King Racing game), 3> Stealth Creeping Around/Tense Music (like Metal Gear Solid). Written in less than one week, these three tracks led to Steve getting a full-time role at Rare in the audio department.

Rare Application Music (Three tracks - Action, Comedy Racing, and Ambient/Tense)  (4min 28sec)

Just after finishing studying at the Royal College of Music, Steve worked as an assistant to a film composer in London. During that time it was a perfect opportunity to write music in different styles and learn more about composing using computers and samplers. Here are five tracks written around that time.

Football Game Pitch ver1  (1min 54sec)
Football Game Pitch ver2  (49sec)
Upbeat MIDI orchestra track with a (not very realistic MIDI) Trumpet as the soloist  (1min 55sec)
Early work on a tv nature programme  (1min 57sec)
Music for a tv commercial  (41sec)

This one really is just for fun :-) When Steve was starting out at college, he took a film music course studying with orchestrator Nick Ingman at the Royal Academy of Music. As part of this course, each week a piece of music was required to be written. This is for a fictional tv show called Don't Tell Father! A comedy, quirky, title tune was needed. With only the most basic Yamaha keyboard and still learning how to use a MIDI sequencer, this is the result.
